In 1853 prospector Pieter Jacobus Marais panned for and found traces of alluvial gold in the Braamfontein Spruit, a short distance from this point. This was one of the first gold discoveries on the Witwatersrand, more than three decades before the discovery of the largest gold field on earth. In 1975 this road was renamed Panners Lane to commemorate the historic find.
